"A Difficult Year"
March 4th at 7:00pm
$10 tickets online or at the door
In this puckish comedy from writer-directors, Éric Toledano and Olivier Nakache (The Intouchables, C’est La Vie), two swindlers infiltrate a group of climate activists when they are attracted to the free food and drinks being offered.
When Bruno and Albert first meet, neither is in a good way. Bruno has just stolen a television, while Albert responds to being evicted with a bumbling suicide attempt. Bruno manages to save this doped-up stranger’s life and a friendship is born. They have something in common: both are drowning in debt.
One day, Bruno and Albert crash a meeting held by a group of activists dedicated to fighting overconsumption and climate change. The guys are only attracted by the free beer and have zero interest in speeches about climate change or new-agey, energy-boosting hugs… well, maybe they like the hugs, especially if they come from the group’s beautiful leader who calls herself Cactus. She manages to persuade them to participate in elaborate demonstrations that Bruno hopes will spark a love affair — if he doesn’t get arrested first.
Writer Directors Nakache and Toledano manage to poke fun at their characters while simultaneously honouring them. Above all, A Difficult Year is a satiric romp driven by a belief in people’s fundamental ability to change — and the ability to find beauty in even the bleakest moments.
France | 2023
Writers-Directors: Éric Toledano, Olivier Nakache
Principal cast: Pio Marmaï, Jonathan Cohen, Noémie Merlant, Mathieu Amalric
Runtime: 120m
